Let me introduce you to the Brooklyn-based @summerwheatlillian, an artist I recently encountered at @artbrussels and @artbasel. From a distance, the paintings appear to be tapestries or embroideries but upon closer inspection you can see that paint is pushed through the small openings of an aluminium mesh, creating a soft and textile-like form that evokes the pixilation of digital images. This child looks like me when I was young, it reminds me of what what I’ve been through from the day I was born until my 17th year. My childhood was not filled with joy and love, but with extreme violence and daily abuse. These traumatic experiences reenter my mind every single day and of course they have inflicted me heavily. I had more than my share when it comes to depression, violent behaviour and substance abuse. I have hurt a lot of people during the time I was fighting demons inside my head. I feel very sorry for the people I have done wrong, so terribly wrong. You cannot imagine the guilt I carry and here I am, still trying to fix the things I have broken. Two and half years ago I finally managed to get enough courage to seek help. I went to see a therapist and the diagnosis was very clear, I have a heavy form of PTSD (Post Traumatic-Stress Disorder). Since that day in August 2016 I have worked so hard to break down the walls around me, reliving my traumas, finding compassion and tackle all my escape mechanisms. I’m glad to see that I have changed, the storm inside my head is long gone and can finally say I feel happy with myself. Still, there are people that say my past behaviour is just the way I am. That is not true, it is actually very far from who I truly am today. I’m not posting this to seek attention, but to thank all the people that have stuck with me through all this misery. Here I am, I’ve come along way and I could not have done it without my wonderful friends. So thank you, all of you for being my friend. Love you all xo https://ift.tt/2V7qzFo
